For New & Expecting Parents at Tisch Hospital
When it is time for you to give birth, the obstetric and nursing teams at ºÙºÙÊÓƵ’s Tisch Hospital provide you with the highest level of maternal and infant care. We are certified by The Joint Commission for excellence in advanced perinatal care, and have earned the Baby-Friendly designation from Baby-Friendly USA in recognition of our care and support for people who breastfeed and their babies.
Best Hospitals for Maternity Care
ºÙºÙÊÓƵ ranks as one of the nation’s best hospitals for maternity care, according to U.S. News & World Report. This reflects our commitment to providing the highest-quality labor and delivery care for our patients.
Learn About our Pregnancy CareAn online Ready, Set, Baby! information session, offered by ºÙºÙÊÓƵ’s Center for Perinatal Education and Lactation, guides you through the birth experience. The webinar explains when to go to the hospital, where to go when you get there, and what to expect before, during, and after labor. We also offer many parent education classes and support groups on topics such as labor induction, cesarean delivery, breastfeeding support, and how to care for your newborn once you head home.
We recommend you fill out our birth preferences form and bring a copy with you to the hospital. We also encourage you to discuss the form with your doctor and your birthing partners during one of your prenatal visits, so they understand your preferred birth experience.
Labor and Delivery
When you arrive at Tisch Hospital, valet parking is available at our main entrance. Our staff helps you get to the labor and delivery unit. Once you arrive, our nursing staff checks on the progress of your labor and prepares you for delivery. Each of our laboring rooms have birthing balls to increase comfort, special birthing beds that allow for different positioning, and a bathroom with shower.
For pain management, our anesthesiologists provide epidural and other options for pain relief. All of our labor and delivery teams include patient safety officers, who are physicians that monitor you during labor to ensure the safest delivery possible. Cesarean deliveries occur in one of our surgical suites. Babies who need additional medical treatment are cared for in our neonatal intensive care unit, which is a state-designated Regional Perinatal Center equipped to provide the highest possible level of infant care.
In accordance with ºÙºÙÊÓƵ’s visitor policy, each person in labor can be accompanied by two support people, including a doula, during labor, delivery, and the postpartum period. We encourage skin-to-skin contact with your newborn, and your nurse can provide breastfeeding assistance if needed.
Family Care Suite
After childbirth, you stay in our family care suite. Both shared and private rooms are utilized for postpartum care. All rooms include sleeping space for you, your baby, and a guest. Private rooms are only offered based on availability. For your convenience, we offer digital tablets that allow you to order meals, review educational material, and connect with family and friends.
Your care team can answer any questions you have about your health and wellbeing as you recover from childbirth. Our nurses have extensive lactation training and can help you initiate breastfeeding and overcome any challenges. We also provide instruction on basic newborn care, such as how to feed your baby, the safest sleep positions, swaddling, and giving baby a bath.
The length of stay depends on whether you had a vaginal or cesarean birth. You and your doctor work together to ensure that you and your baby or babies are ready to go home—usually one day after a vaginal birth or two to three days after a cesarean delivery.
