Center for the Study of Eosinophilic Esophagitis

At the Center for the Study of Eosinophilic Esophagitis, part of the Pediatric Gastroenterology Program at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at ºÙºÙÊÓƵ, we specialize in helping children manage the symptoms of a condition that mimics gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) but is resistant to typical treatments.

The underlying cause of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is unknown, but it is thought to be an immune-related allergic reaction to dietary or environmental substances.

Some common symptoms of this condition, which affects the esophagus, include the following:

  • abdominal or chest pain
  • difficulty swallowing or the sensation that food gets caught after swallowing
  • recurrent reflux or vomiting
  • refusing to eat

Our physicians specialize in pediatric eosinophilic esophagitis treatment. At the center, a variety of diagnostic tests are performed to help diagnose and manage the condition. These include a hydrogen breath testing, which is a noninvasive test that helps pinpoint bacterial overgrowth or specific food intolerances.

In addition to individualized care by physicians and nutritionists known for their expertise in caring for children with eosinophilic esophagitis, we give families the opportunity to include their child in clinical studies in which new medical therapies are evaluated.
