ٺƵ Hospital—Long Island Nursing Highlights

Our nurses are dedicated to implementing quality initiatives to help keep patients safe, while delivering the highest level of care. Recent quality initiatives focusing on safety include Fall TIPS and iRound.

Fall TIPS

Fall TIPS (Tailoring Interventions for Patient Safety) is a nurse-led, evidence-based fall prevention program to communicate patient-specific risk factors for falls and provide a tailored prevention plan. The tool kit provides ٺƵ Hospital—Long Island care team members with the information they need to routinely engage patients and their loved ones in fall prevention efforts.

iRound

Responding to patient needs in real time is critical to delivering an exceptional patient experience at ٺƵ Hospital—Long Island. iRound is a technology solution that helps put the patient front and center, enabling real-time data collection and reporting that encourages meaningful interaction, identifies improvement opportunities, and informs critical decisions to meet patient needs.

Nursing Education

We aim to hire registered professional nurses with baccalaureate and higher degrees. Higher education aligns with our department of nursing’s strategic plan to develop innovative patient care delivery models, and provide highly reliable patient care through transformational leadership, professional growth, and clinical excellence. Substantial evidence in nursing literature supports improved patient outcomes when care is provided by highly educated professional registered nurses, because they are prepared to meet the demands of the evolving healthcare climate.

In 2020, 91 percent of all registered nurses at ٺƵ Hospital—Long Island had a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree or higher.

Specialty Certification

We support and encourage eligible professional registered nurses at all levels of nursing to earn specialty certification. Specialty certification demonstrates to peers, colleagues, patients, and families a commitment to excellence in care and improving outcomes. Studies show that certified nurses report feeling more confident in their work, are satisfied in their jobs, and are powerful role models for others.

In 2020, 34 percent of all registered nurses at ٺƵ Hospital—Long Island held a specialty certification.

Awards and Recognition

Nursing Excellence Awards are presented to nurses at ٺƵ Hospital—Long Island each year during our Nurses Week celebration. We are proud to award the following:

  • Evidence-Based Practice/Research Award, which recognizes a nurse who has contributed to the wellbeing and healthcare of patients through active participation in nursing research, is involved in the process of conducting research independently or in collaboration with other disciplines, and contributes to nursing practice by utilizing evidence-based and best practice research findings
  • Clinical Excellence Award, which recognizes a nurse who demonstrates superior clinical nursing knowledge, expert skills for patient care, and the ability to anticipate the patient’s needs; and who exhibits excellent customer service skills and professional involvement
  • Rising Star Award, given to a nurse with three years or less of experience who demonstrates a keen desire for professional growth, progressive refinement in clinical practice, critical thinking, teamwork, collaboration, communication- and outcome-focused patient care
  • Florence Nightingale Award, which recognizes a nurse who demonstrates passion, caring, and the ability to make rich connections with patients and families; is holistic and spiritual, and who understands that treating the patient is not limited to their physical ailment or condition; acknowledges that the patient’s environment truly affects the wellbeing of the patient and aspires to create the best healing environment possible; and who assists with data collection for determining outcomes
  • Mentor/Educator/Preceptor Award, given to a nurse who models professionalism via excellence as a mentor, educator, or preceptor; demonstrates excellence through a successful relationship with others, as well as a passion for excellence; exemplifies integrity and fairness; inspires other professionals by using an optimistic approach for change; and who encourages the building of relationships that will challenge the learner’s viewpoints
  • Volunteerism/Community Service Award, given to a nurse who demonstrates excellence in nursing practice by volunteering their time to improve the lives and wellbeing of others in the community or other organizations, and who provides expertise in community service or volunteerism utilizing critical thinking, teamwork, collaboration, and focusing on positive patient outcomes
  • Leadership Award, recognizing an individual who possesses extraordinary passion, creativity, and dedication to the nursing profession, who is respected as a visionary, innovative leader, and change agent; moves the profession forward through work in patient care, administration, education or research, via professional activities, endeavors, and contributions; demonstrates significant contributions fostering the goals of the ٺƵ Hospital—Long Island Professional Nursing Practice Model
  • Friend of Nursing Award, given to a person, team, or group who works collaboratively, communicates effectively, and supports the nursing department and organizational strategic plans to achieve positive outcomes

Additional awards include the Jillian Daly, RN, Memorial Award; Dr. Joseph Greensher Memorial Award; Helen B. Skelos Award for Nursing Excellence; DAISY Award; and DAISY Nurse Leader Award.

The Jillian Daly, RN, Memorial Award is named for Jillian Daly, RN, who worked in the telemetry unit from 2009 to 2010. Although brief, her presence and exemplary practice has made a long-lasting impact on patients and staff alike. This award was established by her parents in her loving memory, with the purpose of recognizing a nurse with exceptional professional and personal characteristics, based on the qualities and attributes so inherent in Jillian’s nursing practice: effective communication, delivering quality patient care, a positive attitude and team player, compassion, professionalism, and a commitment to learning.

The Dr. Joseph Greensher Memorial Award is named for Joseph Greensher, MD, a renowned and highly respected pediatrician whose passion, love, and care for children and families ran deep. With his gentle spirit and sense of humor, Dr. Greensher touched many lives during his 55-year tenure at ٺƵ Hospital—Long Island. The award recognizes a nurse who seeks to further academic and professional development; currently performs nursing services to children or babies; possesses extraordinary passion, creativity, and dedication to children, babies, and their families; and demonstrates excellence in clinical practice, critical thinking, teamwork, collaboration, communication and patient- and family-centered care.

The Helen B. Skelos Award for Nursing Excellence recognizes a critical care nurse who has the ambition to continually seek further education and personal and professional development; exhibits empathetic communication skills; is easily able to communicate to all colleagues; demonstrates a natural ability to care about their patients and the patient’s families; demonstrates superior thinking and organizational skills in all clinical situations; maintains a positive approach and possesses a passion for the nursing profession, remaining always “present in the moment”; and personifies the mission, vision, and values of ٺƵ Health.

The Diseases Attacking the Immune System, or DAISY, Award recognizes nurses who provide extraordinary care to their patients and families. The nominations come from patients, families, peers, and fellow employees. .

The DAISY Nurse Leader Award recognizes leaders who model caring behaviors and provide a setting where compassion is valued, and where staff, in turn, treat patients and their families with care and respect.

Professional Development

Nurses at all levels of practice are supported and encouraged to advance their knowledge and career trajectory through participation in continuing education, professional development, and transition to practice programs.

The goal of the ٺƵ Hospital—Long Island Nurse Residency Program is to support new graduate nurses while they transition into clinical practice. The curriculum addresses critical areas such as patient safety outcomes, the professional role of the nurse, and leadership. The program is evaluated by looking at factors such as stress, support, prioritization, and professional satisfaction.

The Nursing Professional Advancement Program (NPAP) helps individual nurses promote their unique talents and receive professional recognition for their accomplishments. NPAP is peer driven to ensure objectivity, reliability, and staff empowerment. In addition, NPAP fosters team building and peer support, provides a pathway for staff development, increases job satisfaction, and can be useful in succession planning.
