Bone is a fascinating tissue because of its potential to regenerate rather than scar. Sometimes, however, a broken bone forms a painful nonunion, in which it does not heal properly. To determine how I can best help patients suffering from broken bones, I study the molecular and cellular processes involved in bone healing.

My research on skeletal stem cells has provided me with a unique perspective on how bones heal. It is this knowledge, together with the state-of-the-art facilities and tools for orthopedic surgery at ºÙºÙÊÓƵ, that allows me to provide the highest-quality fracture care in the New York metropolitan area.

I provide surgical and nonsurgical care for patients who have all types of fractures. Some of the most common fractures I manage are those involving the ankle, wrist, tibia, femur, pelvis, and clavicle.

As an orthopedic trauma surgeon and scientist, I identify patients who may benefit from biologics—including cell therapy, bone grafts, and other biological medications, such as U.S. Food and Drug Administration–approved growth factors, which harness the body’s ability to heal itself. I may remove skeletal stem cells from a person’s pelvis, for instance, and inject them into the injured area to help a fracture heal. I can also apply growth factors at the time of surgery to stimulate healing.

A fracture is often unexpected, and recovery typically involves physical therapy and can take up to a year. I try to put patients at ease during this stressful time. I present treatment options to patients and then help them decide what is best for them. I go above and beyond to help patients return to their favorite activities.

My research focuses on how bones heal. I am studying the role of growth factors and skeletal stem cells in the healing process, and I am especially interested in how aging affects these cells. My research is funded by the National Institutes of Health and several orthopedic foundations, including the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation and the Orthopaedic Trauma Association.

Research Summary

Dr. Leucht received his medical degree in 2002 at the Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany. He then started an orthopaedic residency at the Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Dr. Leucht is a clinician/surgeon scientist and orthopaedic traumatologist with a longstanding interest in the molecular and cellular basis of fracture healing. During his postdoctoral research fellowship in the laboratory of Dr. Jill Helms at Stanford University he focused his efforts on (1) determining the underlying cell and molecular regulatory mechanisms involved in skeletal development and fracture repair, (2) investigating the role of the mechanical environment during fracture repair, and (3) stem cell-based tissue engineering strategies to enhance bone regeneration. In particular, he is the first author on a Development publication describing for the first time an adult function of Hox genes during skeletal regeneration. Dr. Leucht’s expertise and skills include in vivo fracture healing models in mouse, rat and rabbit, bone histomorphometry, genetically modified mouse models, in situ hybridization, microCT analysis, and routine cell and molecular biology techniques.
