Dr. Pan's research interest is focused on the field of natural history of viral hepatitis, antiviral therapy and the prevention of vertical transmission of hepatitis virus.

Through more than a decade of research, Dr. Pan has established the risk stratification model for identifying mothers with high risk of viral transmission. His studies have included work to define the threshold levels of viral load for vertical transmission of hepatitis B and other risk factors including cesarean section, vaginal delivery, and amniocentesis. These works have led to changes in the hepatitis B guidelines of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. A pioneer in the field of antiviral therapy for pregnant mothers, Dr. Pan has studied extensively on the safety and efficacy of the intervention, including the impact of fetal exposure to antivirals on infants’ physical growth and neurodevelopment. In his most recent studies on tenofovir treatment during pregnancy, he demonstrated that the therapy could offer great promise in achieving a zero viral transmission rate by reducing the maternal viremia at delivery. The intervention seems to be safe and has great potential to help eradicate hepatitis B around the world.  Widely published, Dr. Pan has presented his work in leading peer-review journals including: The New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology, and Hepatology. In recognition of his work related to hepatitis B prevention, Dr. Pan has received the James D. Bruce Memorial Award for Distinguished Contributions in Preventive Medicine from the American College of Physicians (ACP) and Outstanding Contribution Award from the Chinese Society of Infectious Diseases. He was elected to the Mastership of the American College of Physicians in 2016.
