I started my medical career as an adolescent medicine specialist. My particular interest is in HIV infection in adolescents and young adults. While doing my fellowship in general pediatrics, I identified a need in Philadelphia for comprehensive, respectful care for children and adolescents who were HIV positive. This was in the early 1990s, and there was a strong stigma surrounding HIV, even in children.

To meet this need, I launched the first clinic at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia devoted to the care of children and adolescents with HIV and AIDS. I recruited social workers, nurses, psychologists, and fellow doctors because I wanted to provide these youth with the resources they needed medically, as well as socially and emotionally.

That experience led me to participate in the Centers for AIDS Research program at the National Institutes of Health, the Ryan White CARE Act Title IV Strategic Planning Committee, and the White House’s advisory committee on adolescents for the Office of National AIDS Policy.

I led numerous nationwide studies involving novel HIV treatment and prevention strategies. I chaired or co-chaired several National Institutes of Health scientific committees on HIV infection in adolescents and served as one of the only pediatricians on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Panel on Antiretroviral Guidelines for Adults and Adolescents. In 2009, I joined ºÙºÙÊÓƵ Health as vice chair of pediatrics.

These experiences paved the way for my work as senior vice president and chief of hospital operations at ºÙºÙÊÓƵ Hospital—Brooklyn, a 450-bed acute care teaching hospital, comprehensive stroke center, and Level 1 Trauma Center. Coordinating care at the management level allows me to influence the full spectrum of healthcare and meet people’s needs in an even more substantial way. I am also professor of pediatrics at NYU Grossman School of Medicine.

During my time at ºÙºÙÊÓƵ Hospital—Brooklyn, I have led the hospital’s transformation and implementation of quality initiatives and clinical programs. At ºÙºÙÊÓƵ Hospital—Brooklyn, we aim to provide our diverse community with world-class healthcare in the community where they live. My goal is to continue to expand the full complement of medical and technological services available at ºÙºÙÊÓƵ Hospital—Brooklyn while maintaining the same high standard of patient care for the community.
