Head and neck masses in children are common and usually benign, meaning noncancerous. These swollen lumps or bumps may occur as a result of inflammation or infection. A cyst, a fluid-filled sac that can grow in size, may also cause a mass. Rarely, a head or neck mass is a cancerous tumor.
