Recovery & Support for Chronic Lung Disease of Prematurity

Specialists at Hassenfeld Children's Hospital at ٺƵ offer support services to help babies recover fully from chronic lung disease of prematurity, including wellness and psychosocial programs that support your family during your baby’s treatment at ٺƵ.

Our child and family support services and resilience programs are provided by Sala Institute for Child and Family Centered Care.

Monitoring Respiratory Function

Most babies eventually recover lung function after treatment for chronic lung disease of prematurity. Yet they often require care for a year or longer to ensure that their lungs develop without permanent injury.

Our pulmonologists periodically assess your baby’s lung function and can work with your pediatrician to keep your baby’s vaccination schedule up to date—including respiratory syncytial virus vaccinations for two years—which can reduce the risk of infection as your baby’s lungs heal.

Developmental Assessment

The neurodevelopmental clinic at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital is staffed by a neonatologist, a clinical psychologist, and occupational and physical therapists who look for signs of developmental delays—including motor, cognitive, and speech delays—in premature babies during the first two years of life. After a neurodevelopmental assessment, doctors from our clinic may refer your baby to the appropriate therapists at ٺƵ’s Rusk Rehabilitation or to providers in your community of “early intervention” services—programs available in each state for children with disabilities and their families.

Family Counseling

Our doctors understand the anxiety your family may feel if your newborn has chronic lung disease. Our neonatal experts provide care within a family-centered, supportive environment and can refer you to counselors for psychological support.
