Support for AIDS-Related Lymphoma

After you’ve completed treatment for AIDS-related lymphoma, doctors at ºÙºÙÊÓƵ remain involved in your care. They determine how often you need follow-up appointments, which may include physical exams, blood tests, and imaging tests to ensure the condition has not returned. Follow-up care depends on the type of lymphoma and the treatments given.

ºÙºÙÊÓƵ’s Perlmutter Cancer Center also offers a number of support services to help you manage your health after treatment. These services may be especially valuable if you have had a stem cell transplant.

Integrative Therapies

Our doctors may recommend integrative therapies—which complement conventional treatments—as you recover from lymphoma and from treatments such as medication, radiation therapy, and stem cell transplantation.

At ºÙºÙÊÓƵ, our integrative health services include massage therapy, which can reduce stress, and acupuncture, which can relieve chemotherapy-related hot flashes and fatigue related to radiation therapy.

HIV and AIDS Support

HIV and AIDS are chronic, lifelong conditions. ºÙºÙÊÓƵ specialists provide support as you manage medications and any complications that arise during treatment.

Most people with HIV use a combination of medications, called antiretroviral therapy, to keep the virus in check for the rest of their lives. If you’re taking antiretroviral therapy, you visit your care team every few months for regular checkups.

Our specialists monitor you for side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bone loss, or skin rashes. They also monitor your risk of heart attack, which may increase with long-term use of antiretroviral medications. Doctors also check for complications of HIV or AIDS, including infections such as cytomegalovirus or nontuberculous mycobacterial infections, anemia, or other cancers.

ºÙºÙÊÓƵ doctors understand that receiving a diagnosis of a chronic, life-threatening illness can be devastating. Our experts can connect people who have HIV or AIDS with educational programs and community support groups.

Managing Weakness and Fatigue

Experts at ºÙºÙÊÓƵ’s Rusk Rehabilitation offer programs in strength training and aerobic exercise to address weakness and fatigue caused by cancer or cancer treatments. After an evaluation, our rehabilitation medicine specialists can prescribe a program that includes physical and occupational therapy to optimize your strength and help you maintain your independence.

Neuropathy Treatment

Doctors at Rusk Rehabilitation can prescribe medication to ease the discomfort associated with neuropathy—nerve damage that occurs after taking some chemotherapy medications, causing numbness, tingling, and pain in the hands, feet, arms, or legs. They can also prescribe physical therapy to help prevent the condition from affecting your balance, strength, and walking.

Psychological and Social Support

People who have been treated for AIDS-related lymphoma may experience depression, anxiety, and other psychological issues related to coping with two long-term conditions, lymphoma and HIV. Perlmutter Cancer Center offers group counseling and one-on-one therapy sessions with a psycho-oncologist, a healthcare provider trained in addressing the psychological needs of people with cancer.

Social workers are also available to help you address financial concerns associated with ongoing treatment and monitoring.
