10 Scholarships Awarded to Local High School Athletes
For the sixth consecutive year, NYU Winthrop Hospital鈥檚 Sports Medicine Program spread the wealth among aspiring Long Island students, awarding scholarships to high school seniors who planned to pursue college programs in healthcare or related fields. Ten scholarships were awarded in total, each for $500, with the annual scholarship program intended to help promote and inspire the next generation of healthcare providers. The scholarships involved 10 high schools that are among those that NYU Winthrop partners with in providing athletic trainers to the schools鈥 sports teams. The sports medicine scholarship committee asked potential recipients to explain, via essay, how athletics played an important part in their goals for future contributions in healthcare. Potential recipients were also required to have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
鈥淲hile our mission is to help with the training and safety of Long Island student-athletes, NYU Winthrop also believes it important to give back to the community by honoring those who will pursue careers in the field of medicine or a related profession,鈥 said Stephen Wirth, PT, administrative director of sports medicine at NYU Winthrop. 鈥淲e hope to expand this scholarship program even more as our athletic trainer program continues to grow across the breadth of Long Island.鈥
