NYU Winthrop Hospital is pleased to announce the appointment of Aaron E. Katz, MD, to the position of chairman of the Department of Urology. Dr. Katz is an internationally recognized leader in the field of minimally invasive therapies for prostate cancer.

A diplomate of the American Board of Urology, Dr. Katz joins Winthrop from Columbia University Medical Center where he most recently served as vice chairman of urology. In addition, Dr. Katz was a professor of clinical urology at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons and the director of the Center for Holistic Urology—a research-based center that he established in 1998 to further study the role of natural therapies within urology. At the center, Dr. Katz served as the principle investigator for several groundbreaking clinical trials which led to important contributions to the urology field and have been presented and published in numerous peer-reviewed medical journals.
Dr. Katz has published over 100 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals and authored several chapters in urology text books. What’s more, he has published several books on prostate health. His most recent book, The Definitive Guide to Prostate Cancer, is currently the number one selling book on prostate cancer on Amazon.com.
Dr. Katz has made numerous television appearances on shows such as Fox News and Good Morning America and recently became a regular contributor on the Don Imus show. He is also the host of “Katz’s Corner” which broadcasts every Sunday morning on WABC radio with a listenership of over 130,000 people.
Upon graduating with his medical degree from New York Medical College in 1986, Dr. Katz completed a residency in general surgery followed by a residency in urology at Maimonides Medical Center. Following the completion of this six-year training program, Dr. Katz was awarded a Ferdinand Valentine Fellowship from the New York Academy of Medicine to further his studies in urologic oncology at Columbia University. During his fellowship, Dr. Katz developed a new blood test to detect micrometastatic circulating tumor cells in patients with prostate cancer that had not yet spread. This methodology was patented and academic institutions continue to publish on the merits of this approach.
A pioneer in the field of prostate cryosurgery, Dr. Katz has taught over 100 urologists nationwide how to perform the procedure and was instrumental in seeking and obtaining Medicare’s approval of it.
In addition, Dr. Katz has been a guest lecturer and visiting professor at numerous national meetings and universities. He has served as the director of the cryoablation course at the American Urological Association’s national meeting and has been a member of the American Urological Association’s Committee on Complementary and Alternative Medicine since 2005. Dr. Katz is also an active member of the Society of Urologic Oncology, Southwest Oncology Group and the Society for Basic Urologic Research.
Dr. Katz resides in Armonk, NY, with his wife and three children.
