On September 25, 2021, Robert Montgomery, MD, PhD, and the ٺƵ Transplant Institute performed the first genetically modified pig kidney xenotransplant into a recently deceased person. That breakthrough procedure kicked off a series of further studies at other institutions as the global medical community seeks a sustainable source of organs for the thousands in need of a lifesaving transplant.
“For a long time, there was a lack of forward inertia. Now we have it,” Dr. Montgomery, the H. Leon Pachter, MD, Professor of Surgery, chair of the , and director of the ٺƵ Transplant Institute, tells STAT. “Even the skeptics are coming around.”
