With the arrival of spring, people cooped up inside because of winter and the pandemic are looking forward to enjoying the warmer weather. But spending more time outdoors can be tough on those who have seasonal allergies that can lead to watery eyes, runny noses, and headaches.
Clifford Bassett, MD, an allergist at ٺƵ Health, says that spring 2021 is shaping up to be a tough season for allergies. There was a lot of snow and rain this winter, and with the warming weather, trees are ready to release their pollen. Dr. Bassett shares his tips on how to proactively fight allergies in preparation for the warmer spring and summer months. As the pollen count rises, Dr. Bassett says the first step is to prepare the nose with allergy medications. He advises working with an allergist to determine the best types for your specific triggers.
“Proactive care reduces needless symptoms, reduces the amount of medications, and many times in my patient population, more than a third of the time, I can actually prevent early symptoms before they even begin,” Dr. Bassett tells People magazine. “Often, over-the-counter antihistamines will work well, as long as they are taken long before you step outside.”
Additional tips include getting an air filter for your home, washing your hair and clothes when you come inside after a day outdoors, and wearing sunglasses and a face mask to block pollen from getting into your mouth, nose, and eyes.
