NYU Langone Health has distinguished itself for quality care in many ways over the past several years—recently adding further to its commitment to quality through its role in environmental leadership.

The health system received top accolades from the U.S. Green Building Council under its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and Performance Excellence in Electricity Renewal (PEER) standards. In addition, it was recognized by Practice Greenhealth and Health Care Without Harm for healthcare resiliency and climate leadership. �ٺ���Ƶ’s main campus in Manhattan is the first in the world to achieve both PEER and LEED Platinum certification.

After Superstorm Sandy in 2012, �ٺ���Ƶ executed a precedent-setting overhaul of its power systems and campus infrastructure, with an increased emphasis on resilience, energy efficiency, and green building design.

As part of its sustainability mission, �ٺ���Ƶ is committed to a 50 percent carbon reduction goal by 2025 as part of the NYC Carbon Challenge for Hospitals, and—as of the end of 2018—has achieved a 34 percent reduction in carbon emissions for its owned portfolio and major sites.

�ٺ���Ƶ has received numerous honors over the past years from leading environmental organizations, including the following.

LEED Platinum Certification 

This certification is an internationally recognized standard for innovative sustainable building design, construction, operations, and maintenance. The following �ٺ���Ƶ locations have this certification:

• Kimmel Pavilion, which is the first newly constructed hospital in New York state to achieve such status
• Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at �ٺ���Ƶ, which is the first children’s hospital in New York state to achieve this status

PEER Platinum Certification

This certification recognizes power system efficiency, resiliency, and reliability. In 2018, �ٺ���Ƶ’s main campus was the first campus in the world to achieve this highest level of certification under PEER. Now the main campus and its buildings are the first to receive the highest-level Platinum certification under both PEER and LEED.

2019 U.S. Green Building Council Leadership Award

This award recognizes organizations and individuals that have made meaningful change and practices towards green building adoption across the world.

2019 Climate and Health Innovation Award

This award is given to only one recipient for forward-thinking work in climate resiliency and adaptation.

2019 Top 25 Environmental Excellence Award

This award recognizes hospitals for leading sustainable practice across the nation when compared with peer institutions.
