NYU Langone Health announced today it received the 2020 Award for Excellence in Institutional Development from Urban Land Institute (ULI) New York for its campus transformation project, which included the construction of the Helen L. and Martin S. Kimmel Pavilion, Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital—34th Street, and the Science Building. The Awards for Excellence recognize outstanding development projects in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors across New York state that are committed to responsible land use and to creating sustainable, thriving communities.

The dramatic reimagining of �ٺ���Ƶ’s physical portfolio started in 2008, focusing on its Manhattan inpatient facilities as well as an ambitious expansion of ambulatory locations. The project was selected for its excellence in development, including the following:

• Identifying the institution’s current and long-term programmatic needs and establishing a framework for growth. All existing facilities were evaluated based on condition, energy efficiency, resilience, site utilization, and capacity to accommodate future requirements.
• Developing a comprehensive infrastructure plan to radically increase the sustainability and resiliency of the campus, including elevated infrastructure, on-site power generation, and perimeter flood protection, which together allow continued care through flooding and other disasters. Of note, Kimmel Pavilion has been certified as LEED Platinum, a distinction shared by fewer than 10 hospitals across the globe.
• Connecting all buildings on campus with an integrated network of public spaces, concourses, green spaces, and retail and food venues, creating an architecturally coherent district on an urban scale and demonstrating that medical centers can function as civic spaces within the city.

Vicki Match Suna, AIA, executive vice president and vice dean for real estate development and facilities, accepted the award on behalf of �ٺ���Ƶ during ULI New York’s virtual gala on November 2.

“When we set out on the transformation of our Manhattan campus more than a decade ago, we envisioned a holistic and full-scale reimagining of our physical environment, one that would respect our history and reflect our mission to grow as a world-class integrated academic health system focused on excellence in clinical care, education, and research,” says Match Suna. “From the earliest stages of planning, through design and construction, our project management team worked closely with our partners at Ennead Architects to transform this vision into reality. We are honored and grateful to receive this recognition, and very proud of the profound impact this project has had on our institution, and on New York City as a whole.”

About the Urban Land Institute Awards for Excellence, Awards Committee, and Awards Jury

The ULI New York Awards for Excellence recognize the full development process of a project, including its architecture and design. Projects that reflect best-in-class development are celebrated in 10 categories: office development, market-rate housing development, affordable housing development, mixed-use development, repositioning or redevelopment, hotel development, retail development, institutional development, industrial development, and civic development.

The Awards Committee and Awards Jury comprise ULI New York members across the spectrum of New York real estate, including developers, architects, urban planners, construction managers, lenders, and investors. The Awards Committee manages the awards selection process, the nomination of awards finalists, and the Awards Gala. The Awards Jury selects winners by analyzing each finalist’s project to determine how well it exemplifies the principles of ULI New York and the awards selection criteria. Jury members conduct site tours of all nominees as part of their decision-making process.
