Researchers from the University of Minnesota successfully created a birth control pill for male mice that was 99 percent effective in preventing pregnancy. While the news of this trial is exciting, experts warn that the reality of pills being available for men is very far off on the horizon.

Bobby B. Najari, MD, director of the Male Infertility Program and assistant professor of urology and population health at NYU Grossman School of Medicine says, “I’ve been excited about animal studies demonstrating promise for male contraceptives for a while now, and each time I get disappointed.”

While scientists continue to work on a solution, Dr. Najari shares that vasectomies and condoms are two forms of male birth control available for men at this time.
