After studying firefighters that were exposed to toxic chemicals at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, or during the subsequent cleanup, analysis showed that although many of them have gone on to develop lung disease, many others have not.
Anna Nolan, MD, associate professor in the Departments of Medicine and Environmental Medicine, looked at her research and discovered that the firefighters who developed lung disease also had abnormal levels of metabolites, which are chemicals produced by the body based on diet and food intake.
Fox 5 News NY spoke with Dr. Nolan to get the whole story on how firefighters can help this. “The next step is to try to modify those metabolites, and one of the ways you can do this is to have someone consume a certain diet.â€
