Osteoarthritis is a common condition caused by aging and wear and tear of the joints. Many people with this condition experience significant pain and may require joint replacements.
However, Laith M. Jazrawi, MD, professor of orthopedic surgery and chief of sports medicine at ٺƵ, points out that nonoperative treatments may help reduce the inflammation causing the pain. These treatments include physical therapy and injectable medications such as biologic drugs.
“Platelet-rich plasma as well as stem cell therapy—in which we’re giving patients their own concentrated bone marrow—have inherent healing properties,” Dr. Jazrawi tells CBS New York’s Dr. Max Gomez. “By injecting that back into the knee, it creates this milieu of healing where pain can also be alleviated.”
Dr. Max invited cameras in as he received cortisone and hyaluronic acid injections at the Sports Medicine Center.
