On Friday, March 19, members of the 180th class of NYU Grossman School of Medicine learned the name of the medical institution and residency training program at which their careers as doctors will finally begin. This year, 118 students matched to a spectacular list of top programs across the country.
Due to coronavirus disease (COVID-19) safety restrictions, this year鈥檚 ceremony looked different than past celebrations. After the students received their matches via email, they joined a video call to celebrate with their classmates and advisors.
Each year the match is made through a mutual selection process, with students and residency programs ranking their preferences and a computer algorithm generating a match when there is a fit. The process is run by the National Resident Matching Program庐.
鈥淢y mentors and advisors at NYU Grossman School of Medicine were so supportive, both personally and professionally, which was especially important during a challenging final year and dealing with the pandemic,鈥 says Christopher Kuhner, a fourth-year student who is pursuing a career in emergency medicine. 鈥淚 explored a number of different specialties throughout my time at the school, and I ultimately fell in love with emergency medicine. I鈥檓 very excited to begin my career as a doctor.鈥
For 22 members of the Class of 2021, there was no doubt that they would match at a top residency program. Members of NYU Grossman School of Medicine鈥檚 , an accelerated track for a select group of eligible students, have already been guaranteed acceptance into an 嘿嘿视频 Health that they selected either at the time of their school admission or through an opt-in process during medical school. Another 22 students participated in one of the school鈥檚 dual-degree programs, including 7 students who will be graduating from NYU Grossman School of Medicine鈥檚 prestigious program.
鈥淚n addition to the years of demanding curricula, clinical rotations, and rigorous residency interviews, the Class of 2021 completed their final year of medical school in the midst of a pandemic,鈥 says Linda R. Tewksbury, MD, associate dean of student affairs at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. 鈥淥n top of their regular responsibilities, the Class of 2021 contributed to critical COVID-related research and volunteered for countless hours in support of our patients, staff, and larger community. We鈥檙e so proud and excited for all of the students who matched with such amazing programs around the country and at 嘿嘿视频 Health.鈥
