Pediatric Lung Transplant Program

We provide exceptional care for children through every stage of the lung transplant process.

The Pediatric Lung Transplant Program at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at ºÙºÙÊÓƵ pairs the expertise of the country’s No. 1 lung transplant center with the quality of a pediatric center of excellence—a Level 1 Children’s Surgery Center, designated as such by the American College of Surgeons in recognition of our safety and outcomes.

The Pediatric Lung Transplant Program is part of ºÙºÙÊÓƵ Transplant Institute, which has improved the lives of hundreds of lung transplant patients, starting with the first adult lung transplant in 2018 and the first pediatric lung transplant in 2021. Our Lung Transplant Program was recently recognized by Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR) as the No. 1 center in the country, with a one-year survival rate of 93.45 percent, the shortest time on the waitlist, and a low waitlist mortality.

Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital is the only program in the tristate area to offer transplantation for all four solid organs: lungs, heart, liver, and kidneys.

Personalized Care for Lung Transplant Patients

We provide the highest level of care through a patient- and family-centered approach. In addition to our lung transplant team, we work with pediatric subspecialists who optimize care during referral and evaluation and through the transplant process for patients ages 12 and older.

End-stage lung conditions that may require transplant include the following:

We offer specialized supports such as ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) for children who need advanced heart and lung support. Our expertise in this advanced intervention has earned ºÙºÙÊÓƵ the Platinum Level Center of Excellence Award from the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO).

Pediatric lung transplant patients are treated in the cardiac intensive care unit, where lung transplant experts and cardiac intensivists—doctors who specialize in intensive care—provide the highest-quality care.

Our primary goal is to foster a successful transplant, provide new lungs for the children we treat, and through rehabilitation care, get them back to their lives and the activities they enjoyed before their lung disease progressed.

A Comprehensive, Supportive Approach

Our center is dedicated to supporting every aspect of your child’s care. Through Sala Institute for Child and Family Centered Care, our team—including child life specialists, social workers, clinical psychologists, and registered dietitians—offers supportive services before, during, and after transplant.

We strive to make sure you and your child understand all aspects of the treatment and transplant process, and to support their transition back into home and school after transplant.
